Wisdom From a Flying Finn
Wisdom From a Flying Finn
Dear Friend,
Here's a little quiz for you today…
There is only one athlete in the history of sports who fits all of these criteria. Can you name him?
Won 9 gold and a total of 12 Olympic medals in the 1920's
Has statues standing in Finland and Switzerland
Set World Records
Won gold medals in the 1500 and 5000 meters – with only 2 hours between the races
Has streets named after him
Has a planet named after him
Is pictured on a 10 mark bill
Pretty fair accomplishments wouldn't you say?
The answer: Paavo Nurmi, the Flying Finn.
I have always been a fan of this great runner – being of Finnish descent – and the other day I found a great quote from the Finnish Running Marvel.
It is:
"Mind is everything: muscle-pieces of rubber. All that I am, I am because of my mind."
This runner trained incredibly hard physically, always carrying a stop watch and his race mentality was to just run his competition into the ground…
But, he also knew the true secret to winning. The importance of mental toughness and focus. Paavo knew that he could will his body to do anything.
Be sure to include the mental aspect to your training. Visualize, focus and train your mind while you train your body.

P.S. It's always amazing to me how much these "old-time" runners and coaches knew. For more wisdom from the ages on how to run fast check out Archie Hahn's How To Sprint at http://www.makesyoufast.com/howto.html
