Running Stairs to Success
Running Stairs to Success
Dear Friend,
I'm not the only one benefitting from running ski jump stairs....
After my workout I Friday, I had a funny feeling that I had read about running ski jump steps somewhere before. I dug through some old articles and sure enough, there was one from a popular sports magazine from about a year ago.
The story told about Steve Mariucci and Tom Izzo, then head coaches of the Detroit Lions and Michigan State Spartans - pretty successful in their respective businesses, you'd have to admit.
Anyway, turns out that both coaches grew up together as best friends in a small town in the U.P. of Michigan called Iron Mountain. Being from a family of Yoopers myself, I took a lot of interest in the rest of the article.
The two captained the track, football and basketball teams in high school but the piece I remembered is that Steve and Tom used to run the stairs at the Pine Mountain ski jump 'til they puked...' This trainining was successful in bringing them to play college sports at Northern Michigan University where Mariucci led the football team to a Division II National Championship.
You've probably heard about the rest of their coaching careers... Mariucci has a Division Championship and Izzo a national championship to show for it.
Look like running stairs not only prepares you physically for winning but gets your mentally ready to reach some pretty lofty goals.
