How To Get Powerful Cleaning Garage
How To Get Powerful Cleaning Garage
Dear Friend,
Holiday weekends usually mean one thing at my house...
Get caught up on all the crummy jobs.
OK, so it's not that bad, but I did get to clean out my garage last weekend. As always, I tried to find something fun and productive about one of my least favorite tasks...
Case in point. Last summer I installed a basketball hoop next to my driveway - great for vertical jump and explosive type work, oh, and for playing hoops. The pole itself had to be anchored in a giant hunk of concrete.
Of course I had some left over and - being my typical frugal - i.e. cheap - self, I kept a half bag of Sackrete... 'cuz you never know when you will need some.'
Also typical, I saved something that I will never use. Why? Because over the winter it apparently got wet and turned into a solid ball of rock. Now, the problem is getting rid of it.
Did I say I would never use it? I lied. Hefting it out of my garage reminded me of a great explosive type power exercise that I have done will medicine balls and shot puts in the past. Why not use the crete for the same purpose?
My plan was to dispose of the concrete in the easement/ditch behind the bike trail in back of my house. Not wanting any nosy neighbors to accuse me of illegal dumping, I waited til well into the night before I performed my secret mission.
Under the cover of darkness, I carried the concrete down through my yard to the edge of the easement. There, I turned my back to the ditch and prepared my power move.
Here's how to do it:
Stand with your back facing the direction of the throw in a half squat position. Hold the weighted object in both hands between your legs. Now, drop and then explode upward, heaving the weight over your head. Jump and make a primal scream to get maximal height and distance.
Ever seen the guys in kilts throwing logs this way? Same idea. Minus the skirt.
I was rewarded with a satisfying splash as the concrete entered its final resting place. Too bad it was a one rep workout. I wonder what else I can find in my garage... and, hey, the basement needs some cleaning too...

Memorial Day Workout
Memorial Day Workout
Dear Friend,
I hope that yesterday, no matter what your national origin, race, political views, etc. you took a moment to think about those who have given their lives to protect your freedom.
Unfortunately, this has hit too close to home with all of the losses in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world... including one of my former athletes.
Did you know that Memorial Day - or Decoration Day - has been around since after the Civil War? There's your history lesson for the day... I am a recovering history teacher, you know...
Here's another lesson for you. Whenever I think about the military, I think about basic training. I remember paging through my dad's 'yearbook' from basic that he went through in the Air Force. One thing that still sticks in my brain from those black and white photos were the pictures of recruits doing calisthenics and bodyweight exercises.
And that's the reason why I decided to celebrate Memorial Day with some strength training bodyweight exercises of my own last night. Put yourself through this workout for some serious upper body work:
Handstand pushups - maximum number
Chinups or Pullups - maximum number
Handstand pushups - maximum number
Chinups or Pullups - maximum number
Handstand pushups - maximum number
Chinups or Pullups - maximum number
You'll be surprised how fast the maximum number goes down after only a set or two...
Add in some lower body exercises from Ultimate Insider Speed Training Secrets http://www.makesyoufast.com/ultimateinsiderspeed.html and you'll have yourself a whale of a whole body workout...

Sprinting Au Natural
Sprinting Au Natural
Hello Friend,
Last Monday afternoon I got the chance to run some hills the way nature intended…
Now, I kept my clothes on – I'm not like the ancient Greek Olympians who used to sprint in the buff… ouch is all I can say about that…
No, the natural I'm talking about is the setting where I did my workout. I have found a new set of hills to run with a nice gravel path that winds through some meadows, oak trees and fields.
Talk about back to nature. Before I started sprinting I saw 4 rabbits, a turkey and 2 deer that stood and watched me for about 5 minutes. The wonderful world of nature was all around me – sun shining, bird and insects singing, almost 70 degrees, not another human soul in site.
To me, this is a big part that is missing from a lot of people exercise programs. The experience beyond just the physical part. Too often we work out in a sterile environment with hi – tech machines, floor to ceiling mirrors and piped in music.
Funny thing was, most of the animals I saw – except the turkey who took off like, well, I guess like a turkey out of hell – looked at me sprinting like it was the most normal thing in the world. They all do it don’t they? Especially that turkey - man, that thing could move. I imagine they would have thought differently if I had been chugging and laboring on some treadmill or other goofy piece of artificial equipment, heart monitor strapped across my chest, mp3 and headphones dangling off of me.... that would have seemed very un-natural.
Remember that your body is built to move. Don't complicate things too much. Get outside, find an open space and run. There isn't a much simpler way to get great results.

These Emails Don't Lie…
These Emails Don't Lie…
Hi Friend,
In between rain storms today, I snuck in a great hill sprint workout with a friend of mine.
It started pouring as I drove to The Hill – as I am now affectionately calling it. Luckily, I stuck it out because the rain stopped after only about 10 minutes.
Could have used the excuse that it was raining, could have used the excuse that the grass was wet… it was too muddy… my son kept me up last night, etc. but then I would have missed out on a killer workout. No excuses!
I met my friend at the bottom of The Hill and we did a little warmup. Then a whopping two hill sprints… doesn't seem like much does it? A total of less than 1 minute of actual sprinting – just two trips to the top - was more than enough to leave us both admitting that The Hill had won again.
We recovered a bit on a picnic table and then walked back to the parking lot.
When we got to our cars, my training partner said, "I feel like I just ran a couple of miles. I guess your emails don't lie."
Enough said.
Don't believe in the power of high intensity workouts? Take it from me – and anyone else who has added sprinting into their workouts – it works.

Deal or No Deal?
Deal or No Deal?
Dear Friend,
If you really think about it, the new game, Deal or No Deal is over when the contestant picks their first case… the rest of the drama doesn't really matter.
If you have watched this show at all you know that the drama builds as each case is picked. Will there be a "safe" low number inside or will another huge amount come off the board. Contestants hem and haw over which case to pick, stressed out, freaked out about which decision to make.
But, if you really think about it, there is no reason to stress… they have already picked their case and nothing they do after that point affects the amount of money inside. There really aren't any other important decisions to make.
Unfortunately, many people go through life just like this game show. They do one of two things:
Either, they wait for the perfect time to make the "right" decision – guess what? There never is a perfect time so they never decide at all…
Or, they make a decision and then "should" all over themselves and beat themselves up for making the wrong one.
The reality is that there are very few "right" decisions. The important thing is to make a decision and then self correct as you move forward. Waiting around for the perfect decision or second-guessing the decisions that you make will get you nowhere – fast.
Now, I'm not saying you shouldn't be careful about important decisions – do all the necessary research to make a good one. But, once you have the info, take action and decide. Your job then is to let things happen, adjust on the fly and guide yourself to the end goal. Very seldom will the process be perfect or will you reach your destination in a perfectly straight line.
Instead, you will make mistakes and miscues, react to them and fix them – all with the end in mind.
There are examples of this wherever you look. How often do military strategies go according to plan? There is a reason that they adapt and overcome…
What about sports? Not many game plans go unchanged once the contest begins and the shinola starts to hit the fan… but those who are successful adjust to the unexpected and come out winners.
In the book Psycho-Cybernetics by Dr. Maxwell Maltz, the author uses a guided-missile analogy. Once a missile is fired, it does not take a straight path to its target. It does a series of self-corrections as it winds back and forth to find its ultimate goal.
Don't be afraid to make a decision – even if it is not perfect. The fact that you are moving forward is still better than remaining paralyzed and inactive.

Secret Healing Power of Your Mind
Secret Healing Power of Your Mind
Dear Friend,
If you are only treating an injury physically you are going to be down for longer than need be...
A few weeks ago I had my second - and last - appointment with my physical therapist for my ankle. She couldn't believe how far I had come in such a short time because my ankle had some severe tears and an evulsion fracture thrown in for good measure.
I didn't let her in on my secret - but I will tell you.
Truth is, I did follow the physical therapy exercises that she gave me - along with a bunch of my own which you can find in Ultimate Insider Speed Training Secrets...
But, along with the physical exercise, I also healed myself mentally.
Think this is B.S.? You can easily find hundreds of studies linking positive thinking and the proper mindset with faster healing. Someone's mental attitude is quite often the difference between a person healing fast - or even healing at all...
Anyway, here's a technique you should try if you have an injury or even nagging aches and pains.
Get into a relaxed state with some deep breathing. Now, focus on the area of your injury and continue your deep breathing. When you breathe in, feel your breath travel all the way to you injury - I had to breathe all the way down to my ankle - it can be done. Imagine the breathe bringing healing, warmth and light. When you breathe out, think of your breath being pulled out of you - sucking all the pain, toxins, etc. from your injury.
Practice this a few minutes a day and you can speed up your healing process dramatically.
RFNH
Coach K
PS I really did use exercises from my speed training manual -http://www.makesyoufast.com/ultimateinsiderspeed.html to help rehab my ankle. These same exercises can help make sure you don't hurt your ankles in the first place. Click the link above and find out how you can literally 'sprain-proof' you ankles... and run faster at the same time...

Wisdom on The Bathroom Wall
Wisdom on The Bathroom Wall
Dear Friend,
Last Saturday night I had another revelation in the bathroom...
(Seems like there's a lot of bathroom allusions in these emails lately... remind me to tell you about he power of the shower sometime...)
Anyway, I was at my 12 year old daughters end of the season cheerleading banquet when nature called...
I hoofed it over to the restroom - right past the spot where I blew out my ankle in February (great reading if you missed that one - check out the February archives in my blog http://www.makesyoufast.com/speedblog.html )
I stepped into the bathroom, closed and locked the door and... well, I'll spare you the rest of the details.
But, standing there gave me some time to look around and my eyes were immediately drawn to a framed black and white poster on the wall. It read:
'Some people dream of great accomplishments... others stay awake and do them.'
Wow. Profound instead of profane stuff on the bathroom wall. I really like that quote and here's why...
Many people have dreams. Some even have goals. A very small percentage of us even have written goals. And hopefully we are also taking action towards those goals. We are doers.
Being a doer means just that. Doing things that bring you closer to your goals and bring your goals closer to you. Remember that action is the key.
If you aren't taking action and moving forward towards your goals, then you are losing ground every single day.
Be a doer.

Be a doer.

Top 5 Knee Saving Exercises
Top 5 Knee Saving Exercises
Dear Friend,
Last week I wrote about how the exercises in Ultimate Insider Speed Training Secrets can strengthen your knees. I promised to get back to more on this but got caught up writing about some other stuff...
So, now... back to your knees.
I was watching the sports about 2 weeks ago and saw a story about Joe Thomas, the All- American tackle from the University of Wisconsin.
Joe tore his ACL in the Capital One Bowl last January and is busy rehabbing for the upcoming season.
I saw Mr. Thomas using a variety of exercises to get his knee back into shape... they are the same kinds of exercises that will protect your knees even if no injury has occurred.
Here they are - the top 5 exercises for strengthening your knees:
1. Tuck Jumps
2. Side to Side ankle hops
3. Forward and Backward ankle hops
4. Single leg dot drills
5. Single leg hop and hold
Think it's a coincidence that all of these exercises are in the Ultimate Insider Speed Training Secrets manual and DVD? http://www.makesyoufast.com/ultimateinsiderspeed.html I'm not making this stuff up... Joe Thomas is predicted to be in the top 5 NFL draft picks in 2007 - even after a severe injury to his knee. Seems like the exercises he is doing are expected to work...
Bottom line, use these exercises to make your knees stronger than they have ever been. And remember, these same exercises strengthen your arches, anterior tibs, calves and hamstrings - all key components of running fast.
RFNH
Coach K
P.S. Here's a little more detail for you:
1. Tuck jumps teach you to land on the ball of your foot and roll back to your midfoot - avoiding knock-knees and potential ACL problems.
2. Hop and holds are done like this: hop on one foot as far as you can. When you land, freeze and hold the position before hopping to the opposite foot and holding.
There are a lot more important details to all of these exercises in Ultimate Insider Speed Training Secrets - http://www.makesyoufast.com/ultimateinsiderspeed.html If you want to get maximum results from these techniques go get your own copy today.

What She Caught Me Doing In The Bathroom
What She Caught Me Doing In The Bathroom
Dear Friend,
I had closed and locked the door. I was sure that nobody was around... but my wife still heard me...and man, was I embarrassed - at first.
OK, some of you have your minds in the gutter at this point but let me tell you what I was really doing in the bathroom...
Standing in front of the mirror, looking myself straight in the eye and stating my current number one goal out loud to myself. Forcefully, with emotion, from deep down inside - like I really meant it.
This is an essential part of reaching your goals.
Here's why. When you say your goals to yourself this way, you are making them more real. You are involving many more of your senses that don't get involved if you simply read your goal or say it softly to yourself.
A basic technique for teaching and learning follows this same concept. The more senses you use, the more you will learn and internalize the message.
Using the mirror technique has you seeing, hearing and feeling the emotions tied to your goal.
Believe me, if you are doing it right you will feel a change inside of you. Start softly and quietly if you must - it's a good start. But, the sooner you really belt it out - basicly telling yourself what to do - like a drill sergeant - the sooner your goal will become a part of you.
At that point, you will have no choice but to reach it.
Run Fast Not Hard
Coach K
PS If the goal you are repeating into the mirror is to run faster, look no further. You'll find literally dozens of things you can do to improve your speed in How To Sprint and Ultimate Insider Speed Training Secrets. Both available here: http://www.makesyoufast.com

How to Get Body Like First Abercrombie Model
How to Get Body Like First Abercrombie Model
Dear Friend,
Driving down the beltline the other day on my way to run some killer stairs I passed 3 half naked men on the side of the road...
Thankfully, there was not a nudist convention in town. And, no streaking trend had reappeared. No, these 3 men appeared on an A and F billboard.
This made me think of a rerun of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire that I caught part of a few nights before.
The question was: Which of these clothing companies outfitted President Theodore Roosevelt's African Safari?
Even without the 4 choices, you can guess which one it was.
So, to put it bluntly, Teddy Roosevelt was one of the first Abercrombie models. Shirt on, of course...
All kidding aside, Roosevelt is often thought of as our fittest president ever. He was born very sickly but used exercise to build himself into a fine specimen of a man. Teddy used boxing, judo, weight training and nude swims across the Potomac River..... to keep himself in primo shape.
Take a hint from one of the greatest of all presidents. No matter what shape you start out in, don't use it as an excuse. Find a way to get and stay fit.
Tell me if you aren't picturing a spectacled, Teddy R flexing his abs on the African savannah sporting a ripped pair of jeans or some boxer briefs with a moose on them...
You are now if you weren't before.

The Best Way To Lose a World Record
The Best Way To Lose a World Record
Dear Friend,
You've probably heard by now that the world record set last week in the 100 meter dash is no more...
It was all a sham, a lie, a misrepresentation of the facts.
Justin Gatlin didn't run 9.76 - he ran a 9.766.
This thousandth of a second made all the difference. It should have been rounded up to 9.77 - which tied the world record. The correction was made and the timers had some serious egg on their faces...
So, how did Justin react? You might think , like many elite athletes who act like 2 year olds, that the sprinter would be whining, complaining, throwing temper tantrums and threatening lawsuits to keep his record.
Instead Gatlin said this : 'I still think of myself as the fastest man on earth and look forward to proving it again...'
Could you have reacted this positively?
What does this tell us about Justin Gatlin. To me, three things:
He has an incredibly positive self image which is his driving force. He does not base his self worth on what others think of his performance.
He remains goal oriented - doesn't matter when he breaks the record... he WILL do it.
He has shown the skill of turning an obstacle - a setback - into an opportunity
Look to develop these three things in yourself and you will be a success.
And watch the Prefontaine Classic later this month where both world record holders will run the 100. Not against each other though, you'll have to wait until later this summer when they go head to head in England.
I'm rooting for Justin.

70 Year Old Uses It, Stays Strong
70 Year Old Uses It, Stays Strong
Dear Friend,
Today was National Welness at Work day or something to that effect. Pretty silly if you are someone who tries to make every day a wellness day...
But, good to raise awareness for those people who can only fit in one day of exercise a year. Luckily, we know how important it is to do something active EVERY day.
Some good did come out of it... I got a free book. And I'm always looking to keep learning...
This book talks about changing your lifestyle to transform your health. I leafed through it briefly and saw some things I definitely don't agree with - and some good points that really struck home.
For example:
It used to be thought that muscle mass decreased with age. It is true, for instance, that men lose about a half pound of muscle each year after their 20th birthday. So much so that by age 65 the average man had lost 25 percent of his muscular strength. Pretty depressing for us guys, huh?
But, why did studies show this? It wasn't because of some natural 'after 20 it's all down hill and you might as well give up and get ready to die' physical law.
Men lost the muscle because they didn't use it.
More recent studies have shown that 60 and 70 year olds who do strength training have muscles that look and perform as well as some of their 20 and 30 year old counterparts.
So, strength train and use high intensity exercises early and keep doing them for life. If you don't use it, you will lose it. Thankfully, it is largely a matter of choice.
RFNH
Coach K
PS No matter what your age, the high intensity exercises in Ultimate Insider Speed Training Secrets will help you burn flab, build muscle mass and make you explosive and fast. It's never too late -or too early - to go to http://www.makesyoufast.com/ultimateinsiderspeed.html and get started.

How To Save Your Knees
How To Save Your Knees
Hi Friend,
Got an email last week from someone on our list who is having knee surgery tomorrow. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers and wish him a speedy recovery!
Here's how to help keep yourself from going through the same thing...
Many injuries to the knee involve tearing the ACL or anterior cruciate ligament - the main stabilizing structure of the knee.
Each year there are about 80,000 ACL tears in the United States alone. Pretty scarey, huh?
It's even worse for you ladies out there: female athletes are 3 to 5 times more likely to tear this ligament than men. The jury is still out on exactly why this occurs...
But, there are things you can do to protect your knees. An exercise program containing balance, body awareness and hamstring strengthening has been show to decrease ACL injuries from between 20 and 80% - and even more so in women.
And that's a big reason that I included these types of exercises in Ultimate Insider Speed Training Secrets - so you can train injury free to achieve maximum speed. Even if you aren't looking to break the land speed record, you can use the balance, strength and power workouts in the manual to keep your knees intact. Go to http://www.makesyoufast.com/ultimateinsiderspeed.html and learn how to protect them today.
Here are a couple of other interesting facts about ACL injuries:
1. Women's hamstrings absorb only one third the force that men's do - strengthening them will transfer more of the force from the ACL to your hamstring muscle
2. Body awareness can be developed by single leg hops and jumps - these exercises develop propioception or your body's awareness of itself in space.
3. Landing in a 'knocked knee' position is a big cause of ACL tears - training proper landing in jumps can decrease the chance of this happening.
4. Bonus: these exercises also improve your speed, jumping ability and agility and you can get huge results in as littel as 6 to 8 weeks of training.
Take the few minutes a week to get your very own 'knee insurance.' You'll be glad that you invested wisely.

Rubber Slinging Giant Comes Up Short
Rubber Slinging Giant Comes Up Short
Dear Friend,
Flipped through the channels for about 20 seconds last night, caught a great exercise on ESPN - Gridiron challenge.
This show pits AFC and NFC football players against one another in a series of physical challenges - some of them pretty lame.
But last night they were throwing tires. I got to see Eli Manning chuck one for a good distance. Then saw a reply of a defensive lineman throw for some serious distance with a spin. He blew the Giant quarterback away...
He threw a tire 16 yards - that's 48 feet to you and me...
Throwing stuff - tires, medicine balls, stones, football dummies - is an excellent way to build explosive legs.
Heave some heavy objects around and see the results.

Heavyweight Punch, Lightweight Jaw
Heavyweight Punch, Lightweight Jaw
Dear Friend,
Last Friday, boxing lost one of its all-time greats.
The first person to hold the heavyweight championship of the world on two separate occasions, he also won a gold medal at the 1952 Olympics.
Not bad for a guy who was considered too small to win any heavyweight bout and grew up in extreme poverty - learning to box in reform school.
The truth is that Floyd Patterson was too small, but he didn't know it. He made up for his lack of size with blinding speed - see, speed kills.
My favorite quote from Patterson goes like this: "They said I was the fighter who got knocked down the most, but I also got up the most" .
Great attitude because the fighter did get knocked down more than anyone else. He just always got up and usually came back to win.
This quote reminds me of another of my favorites by H.E. Jansen: "The man who wins may have been counted out several times, but he didn't hear the referee."
You can apply these famous quotes to winning your own "fights." As long as you keep getting up for just one more round you will eventually succeed.
Run Fast Not Hard

6 Foot 4 Gopher Spotted In Florida
6 Foot 4 Gopher Spotted In Florida
Dear Friend,
Last weekend I was lucky enough to attend a seminar with some of the smartest, most forward thinking people I have ever known.
One of these people I met for the first time. His name is David and he used to play for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers basketball team.
David told me about the back problems he has had since even before his college hoops playing days... and that he can't really take the pounding of running anymore because of it.
But, like all people with a purpose, he has found a way to keep in shape.
Seems that, while running on hard surfaces kills his back, running and jumping on the trampoline is just fine.
Only problem is, he is getting bored with his routine.
I offered some suggestions. Adding in-place hops and jumps to his workouts. I have used these with football, track and field and other athletes on the ground and in the pool with great results. No reason they can't be done on the tramp.
Since I wrote these up for him, I decided to also give them to you.
Here are some examples:
Pogos pull toes up to your shins
Butt Kicks
Tuck Jumps (more on the importance of these in protecting your knees later this week...)
Forward and Back hops
Side to Side hops
Pike Jumps
Star Jumps (think cheerleader jumps)
Hurdler Jumps (top position is just like it sounds)
Best thing about these is they simultaneously condition you, build your strength, explosiveness and speed - and melt off the flab to boot. Give 'em a try and let me know what you think.

P.S. You can find out the secret to making these jumps even more powerful in Ultimate Insider Speed Ttaining Secrets. Leap over to http://www.makesyoufast.com/ultimateinsiderspeed.html and get yours.

Told You So
Told You So
Hello Friend,
Today in the Middle East, a new world record was set - just like I told you it was going to be...
Justin Gatlin ran 9.76 seconds in the 100 meters to set the new mark and achieved his goal.
But what if he hadn't broken the record today? What if he had run 9.78 or 9.79? Would he be a failure?
Absolutely not. Unless he never ran another 100 meters again, he would have plenty more chances to meet his objective. He would just have needed to adjust his goal.
The same goes for your goals. You should set a target date for them. But, if you don't achieve it by that time, you should not look at it as a failure... you simply keep working at it until you achieve it.
Think about it this way. Even if you don't make your date, you have made progress. You have moved forward and gotten closer to your objective. And that is the key to happiness, always moving forward in pursuit of a goal.
Timeframes can be shifted. The process of achieving your dream is as important - if not more so - than actually fulfilling it.
So, don't get down on yourself if you don't achieve something by your target date. Just shift the date ahead and keep on truckin'.
Run Fast Not Hard
Coach K

I Will Break the World Record
I Will Break the World Record
Dear Friend,
You can bet that these words are running through US sprinter Justin Gatlin's mind right now.
Tomorrow (Friday), Mr. Gatlin - World and Olympic champion - will try to set a new world record in the 100 meter dash. All he has to do is run faster than 9.77 seconds...
So, how is he going to accomplish this?
One majory piece of achieving his goal will be just that - setting the goal. And how he sets it makes a huge difference...
I don't think you'll see Justin walking around saying 'I am the 100 meter world record holder'... that kind of thinking just doesn't work... it involves putting a false statement into your brain - he is not the world record holder yet and this would cast negative doubt into his brain and make him answer to himself 'No, you're not.'
I'd bet that he has set one of these goals instead:
Either - 'I will break the 100 meter world record on Friday May 11th at the meet in Qatar.'
Or - 'I want to break the 100 meter world record on Friday May 11th at the meet in Qatar.'
The difference in stating his goals this way is a huge deal and will give him a better chance of setting the world record.
So, think of Justin tonight. Chances are he is repeating his goal, visualizing his perfect race and preparing to go fast - not hard - for a little under 10 seconds...
RFNH
Coach K
PS My local paper had a picture of Justin sprinting last weekend in Osaka. Incredible photo showing almost flawless form for running fast. Get a copy of the picture and use the information in Ultimate Insider Speed Training Secrets - http://www.makesyoufast.com/ultimateinsiderspeed.html - to decode what you see. Don't have a copy of the manual yet? Making world record time in clicking the link will fix that problem lickety split...

Training Secrets of Bicentennial Fighting Kings
Training Secrets of Bicentennial Fighting Kings
Hi Friend,
I vaguely remember most of these events in the year 1976:
Edwin Moses set the world record in the 400 meter hurdles
Bruce Jenner won the gold in the Olympic Decathalon
The USA turned 200
Rocky hit the movie theaters
Captain and Tenille had the song of the year... I'm a little sorry to remember that one...
I definitely do not remember seeing this:
Fighting Black Kings - a documentary about the training and competition at the World Karate Open Championships
Know why I'm bringing this up? As you know, once in a while... once in a great while... I stay up a little bit later than I should and get sucked into some late night TV. Last night was one of those nights...
But, as always, I found something really interesting and exciting - Fighting Black Kings.
Now, I had never even heard of this movie - even during my Bruce Lee worshipping, nunchaku practicing, see every martial arts movie ever made phase in the late 80's. If I had only known about it...
Much of the film focused on the training these fighters did to develop such powerful legs - their kicks were awesome to see. Guess how excited I was to see these guys - sideburns, afros, mustaches and all - sprinting up hills, up stairs and on the beach as part of their training.
The coolest training I saw - OK, besides punching and kicking the bark off of trees... that was a even cooler - showed two Japanese fighters training at a temple. They ran to a flight of stairs and proceeded to hop up - two steps at a time with their hands behind their backs. Then, at the top, they turned around and hopped down in the same position, one step at a time.
Think of the balance needed for that one. I wouldn't even attempt it without checking and maximizing your balance with exercises like those in Ultimate Insider Speed Training Secrets - http:/www.makesyoufast.com/ultimateinsiderspeed.html.
I can't wait to give this stair workout a try.
RFNH
Coach K
PS The sprinting form on all of these guys was another matter - it was B A D. In case you are ever in a documentary about your own championships, you sure don't want to look like a chicken when you're running... find out exactly how to run the right way by ordering Ultimate Insider Speed Training Secrets at http:/www.makesyoufast.com/ultimateinsiderspeed.html These days you never know when somebody might put you on camera...you just can't afford to wait...

Mile High Exercise Secrets
Mile High Exercise Secrets
Dear Friend,
Even though I was half asleep, this functional exercise info seeped into my brain...
I woke up in Tampa on Monday at 5 am - 4 my time - to get to the airport in time for my flight. Needless to say I was a little groggy by the time my plane took off and I slipped in and out of sleep during most of the first leg of my journey.
But, about a mile up, somewhere over Georgia, I think, I came to enough to blink my eyes for a few moments at one of the TV monitors mounted to the ceiling of the plane.
Funny how I woke up just for this part of the inflight entertainment. Guess we are drawn to things that are important to us...
Anyway, the monitor was showing a clip from a morning show that was all about exercise. I didn't have any headphones but caught plenty of the content from the titles flashed on the screen.
I smiled and chuckled at this "new" and "secret" fitness information - you'll know what I mean if you've been reading these emails...
New secret number one. Stairs are better than the stair climber. Yup, we knew that one already. Putting your body through functional motion wins out over any piece of hi-tech gym equipment. Actually moving against gravity beats spinning your wheels while working out "in place".
New secret number two. Plancks and bridges are better than crunches. Big surprise here too. Crunches isolate one muscle. Plancks and bridges work whole groups of muscle, burn more calories and fat and develop pillar or core strength you can actually use.
As I faded back into oblivion for the rest of the flight, I felt confident in the fact that I had already shared this information with you, and written about it in more detail in Ultimate Insider Speed Training Secrets - http://www.makesyoufast.com/ultimateinsiderspeed.html
Congrats on beating the masses to the punch. The sad thing is, most people will keep doing the same old, mainstream exercise stuff that just doesn't work. Make sure to put the things that do get results into your workouts.
RFNH
Coach K

As I faded back into oblivion for the rest of the flight, I felt confident in the fact that I had already shared this information with you, and written about it in more detail in Ultimate Insider Speed Training Secrets - http://www.makesyoufast.com/ultimateinsiderspeed.html
Congrats on beating the masses to the punch. The sad thing is, most people will keep doing the same old, mainstream exercise stuff that just doesn't work. Make sure to put the things that do get results into your workouts.

Why Pasty White Northerner Jumped In Pool
Why Pasty White Northerner Jumped In Pool
Hello Friend,
I'm sure that I blinded at least a few innocent bystanders when I peeled off my shirt in Tampa on Friday...
Hey, I've been holed up in Wisconsin for the winter. I am the extreme opposite of tan.
But, it was all for a good purpose.
I was in Florida for a seminar with Matt Furey this weekend and had a few hours to spend by the pool before it all got started.
Like I said, I went down, took off my shirt and exposed my lily white skin to the sun for the first time in many, many months. I hopped in the pool to do some strengthening work on my ankle (severe sprain and break a few months back).
The pool is an awesome place to work on the single leg balance, strength and power exercises from Ultimate Insider Speed Training Secrets - http://www.makesyoufast.com/ultimateinsiderspeed.html. The water provides extra resistance for added strength work. It also helps reduce the impact and pounding of the jumps (good for my bum ankle...)
So, there I was, balancing in four feet of water, squatting in the shallows and hopping back and forth across the pool like an albino kangaroo - all for the sake of getting strong, fast, and lean.
Know what the best thing was? I avoided being the lobster red shining Northerner jumping into the pool the rest of the weekend...

Why Not To Kill The Butterflies
Why Not To Kill The Butterflies
Dear Friend,
'I get the butterflies before I perform/compete and I'm so nervous that I blow it...'
This is a common concern that I hear from athletes - but it also applies to anytime you have to perform under pressure.
The answer seems easy. Don't be nervous, teach yourself not to have the butterflies. Kill the feeling.
But, you know what? Nothing is further from the truth.
Here's why. To have a great performance, you have to have energy - lots of it. If you squash your feelings about competing, low energy and a poor performance will result.
Here's what to do instead. Use the butterflies as an energizer. Think of them as a positive feeling. Having the butterflies really means being ready for action. Feeling them means your body is revved up and capable of achieving anything.
So, when you get that feeling in the pit of your stomach, don't think of it as a bad thing. Stop yourself from thinking 'Oh no, here I go again...' Change your thoughts to 'Yes! I am ready...' Use the feeling to energize yourself, adrenalize yourself and take control of the situation.
You can't control the way your body feels, but you have all the control in the world to how you choose to react to those feelings.

What I Learned From the Draft Part II
What I Learned From the Draft Part II
Dear Friend,
Like I said yesterday, the draft can be extremely boring to watch. You wait and wait for the few teams and players that you really care about. You've got to find something to keep you interested...
If you want to run faster 40 times, I hope you saw the video of Florida receiver Chad Jackson.
It is one of the best technically run 40's that I have ever seen.
Great start, head down for his push, excellent arm action, relaxed all the way through the finish. Lots of lessons to learn there.
What got me the most was that Mr. Jackson's head was down almost the entire 40 yards - which generally you shouldn't do. But, he ran a legitimate 4.3, so he must have been doing something right...
That tells me that he is powerful enough to push through almost the entire race. You've got to be incredibly strong to be able to do it.
For most of us, the head should come up to a natural position as the body comes up - when you are done pushing.
But, don't snap your head up too fast, because you'll miss out on most of your push.
If you get a chance to see the video, study it. You can learn a ton by watching somebody run a 40 the right way.

What I Learned From the Draft Part I
What I Learned From the Draft Part I
Dear Friend,
Every year I say I'm not going to do it. And every year I am dead wrong.
I swear I won't watch one of the least exciting events on television. A nine hour ordeal which consists mostly of 15 minute waiting periods while decisions are being made.
But, each year I get sucked into watching a big part of the NFL draft. And every year, I learn a little something.
One thing I saw this year was actually during a commercial break. If you watched any of this, you probably saw the ad because it run about 100 times. Here's a hint: click, clack.
The ad was for a major apparel (and apparantly now shoe) company. It showed several of the projected top picks doing various workouts.
You probably saw that all of these guys were lean, powerful, muscular - in the type of shape many of us try to be in. And how did they get that way?
Through a lot of the types of exercises the commercial showed.
Pulling sleds, cone drills, sprinting, running agility ladders... not a long slow distance shot in the bunch.
Want to look strong, powerful and fast? Train that way.

Running Stairs to Success
Running Stairs to Success
Dear Friend,
I'm not the only one benefitting from running ski jump stairs....
After my workout I Friday, I had a funny feeling that I had read about running ski jump steps somewhere before. I dug through some old articles and sure enough, there was one from a popular sports magazine from about a year ago.
The story told about Steve Mariucci and Tom Izzo, then head coaches of the Detroit Lions and Michigan State Spartans - pretty successful in their respective businesses, you'd have to admit.
Anyway, turns out that both coaches grew up together as best friends in a small town in the U.P. of Michigan called Iron Mountain. Being from a family of Yoopers myself, I took a lot of interest in the rest of the article.
The two captained the track, football and basketball teams in high school but the piece I remembered is that Steve and Tom used to run the stairs at the Pine Mountain ski jump 'til they puked...' This trainining was successful in bringing them to play college sports at Northern Michigan University where Mariucci led the football team to a Division II National Championship.
You've probably heard about the rest of their coaching careers... Mariucci has a Division Championship and Izzo a national championship to show for it.
Look like running stairs not only prepares you physically for winning but gets your mentally ready to reach some pretty lofty goals.
RFNH
Coach K
PS Mariucci and Izzo are definitely Doers and have the success in life to show for it. These types of rewards await people who take action - not those who sit around forever, reading and thinking about it... a lot of Doers who want to run fast already have Ultimate Insider Speed Training Secrets - http://www.makesyoufast.com/ultimateinsiderspeed.html - It's high time you took action yourself and got in on all the important details...
